The ancient village of Samoens is situated in the beautiful valley of the Giffre river nestling in the mountains of the Haute Savoie. The area is a paradise for walkers of all standards, from pleasant valley strolls through lovely alpine scenery to classic routes in the mountains.

Chamonix is less than an hours drive away where Mont Blanc awaits the really adventurous. Here also, one can take the cable car up to the Aiguille du Midi (3000metres) for spectacular views of Mont Blanc's snow covered peak and the surrounding landscape. The cable car to Le Brevent (2525 metres) north west of Chamonix, lets you take in the whole north face of the Mont Blanc and the Aiguille du Midi, too. For a close up view of a glacier and formidable ice caves , take the rack railway up to Montenvers to the dazzling Mer de Glace.

Samoens is a centre for almost every outdoor activity; rock climbing, canyoning, canoeing, rafting, mountain biking, horse riding, fishing and parapenting are all very popular. There are also many excellent golf courses with stunning views, all within easy reach of Samoens. Information about all of these activities can be obtained from the Bureau des Guides or the Tourist Information Office, both of which are in the village. Maps and suggested routes are available for both mountain walking and mountain biking.

The Giffre river, cascading from Sixt through spectacular gorges to Samoens and on to Morillon, provides a picturesque setting for water sports activities.

A large park on the edge of the village offers tennis courts, lakes for fishing and boating, and an open air swimming complex with 3 pools and a water slide. A superb area for sun bathing amongst magnificent scenery. Samoens also has a large botanical garden which displays over 4000 species of alpine plants and trees collected from all over the world.

The village of Samoens is a listed historic site and holds a "Coq d'Or" award as one of the 5 most beautiful villages in France. Here you can absorb the slow rural lifestyle whilst sitting at one of the many cafes or restaurants. Alternatively, Wednesday morning brings the lively atmosphere of a typical French market.

Samoens is a very popular French summer holiday resort which has retained all the character and originality of a traditional French farming community.

Switzerland and Lake Geneva with the beautiful resorts of Thonon les Bains, Evian and the ancient walled town of Yvoire are a one hour drive away, and the charming town of Annecy, often called the "Venice of the Alps" is a similar distance. An hours drive towards Chamonix will take you to the Tunnel of Mont Blanc and into Italy.

This whole area is a treasure trove of breathtaking scenery of lakes, mountains and valleys, providing an unbelievable setting for all outdoor activities or merely sunbathing or strolling at leisure, absorbing the atmosphere, tranquillity and beauty of this lovely corner of France.
