Winter Skiing at "Le Feu"

The Farmhouse in winter

Samoens is the only ski station in France which is a "Bourg Historique". The medieval village is full of character and charm, and has not been spoilt by tourism like so many resorts. It forms part of the Grand Massif ski area which includes the neighbouring villages of Flaine, Morillon, Les Carroz, Sixt and the new 13km piste through Lac de Gers. This is one of the largest and most beautiful ski circuits in the Alps. There is 260km of downhill skiing of all standards and a vast amount of cross country skiing on specially traced pistes. Ski lift passes for the Massif Partial (Samoens, Morillon, Les Carroz and Sixt) or the Grand Massif pass which also includes Flaine can be purchased in the village or at the local telecabine. Ski lessons are available for skiers of all abilities at the ski school in the village. The snow bowl at Samoens 1600 provides an excellent training area for beginners, who soon progress to the lovely tree lined routes.

The more experienced skier will enjoy the miles of superb skiing between the 5 resorts, taking in the magnificent scenery and spectacular views of the Mont Blanc range. The whole area has an excellent snow record.

If all this is not enough, the Portes du Soleil ski circuit is only half an hours drive away at Les Gets. From there you can ski to Morzine, Avoriaz and into Switzerland. Alternatively, Chamonix is less than one hour away where the dramatic Mont Blanc range offers wonderful skiing.

The Bureau des Guides in Samoens can arrange expeditions to La Vallee Blanche at Chamonix. This famous off piste ski run takes you from the summit of the Aiguille du Midi on Mont Blanc, down the glacier to Chamonix, a distance of some 20 to 25km.

Other winter activities at Samoens include snowboarding, ski touring, heli-skiing, ice climbing on waterfalls, snow walking on racquettes, parapenting and ice skating on the open air rink in the village. These can all be arranged at the Bureau des Guides or Tourist Information office in Samoens.

There are numerous bars and good restaurants in Samoens serving traditional Savoyard menus and local food. There is also a discotheque for those with any energy left, or an exhilarating sledge ride through the snow behind a team of huskies.

"Le Feu" is ideally situated for both mountain and village activities alike. It is only 400m from one of the main telecabines linking into the Grand Massif ski circuit and in good snow conditions it is possible to ski back to the farmhouse.
